7. My Life as a Courgette (Claude Barras)

A short and beautiful example of French-Swiss stop-motion cinema, My Life as a Courgette is our animation of the year. Read our review here.

6. The Handmaiden (Park Chan-wook)

Who knew that translating Sarah Waters’ Fingersmith to 1930s colonial Korea would prove so spectacular – Park Chan-wook. Read our review here.

5. La La Land (Damien Chazelle)

The film that – arguably – made musicals cool again, La La Land is a top five joy. Read our review here.

4. Baby Driver (Edgar Wright)

Effortlessly fly, Baby Driver had a soundtrack to die for, elevating the terrific film to the level of masterpiece. Read our review here.

3. Paddington 2 (Paul King)

The best family film of the year, Paddington 2 – like its predecessor – is an instant classic. Read our review here.

2. Elle (Paul Verhoeven)

Frankly, we could rave about Isabelle Huppert for hours but we’d rather just re-watch Verhoeven’s tremendous Elle. Read our review here.

1. Moonlight (Barry Jenkins)
