We continue our annual retrospective with a look at the top ten film quotes of the past twelve months. Have we missed any? Let us know in the comments!
10. Widows (Steve McQueen)
‘We’ve got a lot of work to do – crying isn’t on the list.’
Viola Davis nailed every line she was given by McQueen and co-writer Gillian Flynn but this one was her pièce de résistance. Read our full review here.
9. Skyscraper (Rawson Marshall Thurber)
‘If you can’t fix it with duct tape…you ain’t using enough duct tape.’
Skyscraper won’t feature on many top ten lists this year but the comic asides in Thurber’s script make it a worthy entry. Read our review here.
8. The Breadwinner (Nora Twomey)
‘Stories remain in our hearts even when all else is gone’
An enchanting quote from a delightful and thoroughly thought provoking film. Thank you Deborah Ellis and Anita Doron. Read our review here.
7. First Man (Damien Chazelle)
‘You’re a bunch of boys making models out of balsa wood! You don’t have anything under control!’
You tell ’em Claire! Read our review here.
6. BlackkKlansman (Spike Lee)
‘It’s time for you to stop running away from being black.’
Lee was back to his razor sharp best in BlackkKlansman but, for all the wit, it was this empowering line from Laura Harrier’s Patrice that caught our eye. Read our review here.
5. The Happy Prince (Rupert Everett)
‘Intimacy in the sewers, followed by fantasy in the Gods. The rest is silence.’
Not nearly enough people are talking about The Happy Prince. Watch out for Everett in our top ten performances list over the coming days but for now revel in the beauty of this adage. Read our review here.
4. Christopher Robin (Mark Forster)
‘People say nothing is impossible but I do nothing every day.’
When this quote popped up in the Christopher Robin trailer, we were sure that the film was going to be a winner. It wasn’t but we still love Pooh’s nonsense aphorism. Read our review here.
3. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (Joel and Ethan Coen)
‘There’s just gotta be a place up ahead, where men ain’t low down, and poker’s played fair. If there weren’t, what are all the songs about?’
Surely, the Coen’s Ballad is a shoe-in for Best Screenplay nominations next Spring? It helped that Tim Blake Nelson delivered lines like this one with oral eloquence. Read our review here.
2. Bros: After the Screaming Stops (Joe Pearlman and David Soutar)
‘I made a conscious decision, because of Stevie Wonder, to not be superstitious.’
This was the real-life documentary that out-did This is Spinal Tap in deliriously quotable one-lines. See also: ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day…but we don’t have the time that Rome had.’ Read our review here.
1. Lucky (John Carroll Lynch)
‘There are some things in this world that are bigger than all of us…and a tortoise is one of ’em!’
Whilst Harry Dean Stanton stole our hearts in Lucky, this line saw David Lynch thoroughly break them. Read our review here.

Love your list! I think that Lucky could offer a lot of memorable quotes, you were right in putting it at the top of your list! I enjoyed that movie a lot, as you can tell:
