By default of its plot, Sebastián Lelio’s Chilean Oscar winner, A Fantastic Woman, challenges the mind and engages the heart. It is a dream-like film that sees darkness soaked in light and realism bathed in magic and is utterly compelling.

There’s a terrific scene early on in The Nile Hilton Incident in which Fares Fares’ Commander Noredin Mostafa attends a crime scene and proceeds to rob the victim whilst in the midst of his investigation. It is an instance that perfectly captures the complexity of the world in which the film unfolds and establishes its lead as a fascinating protagonist.

Rather like Daniel Radcliffe before her, post-franchise Jennifer Lawrence has embarked on the unwieldy path of cinematic experimentation of late. Taking risks like mother! has the potential for high hits and major misses. Red Sparrow is a bit of both.
