As the year reaches its close, it is time for the annual rankings. In a year of wonderful scripts, here are the best film quotes of 2017 – let us know if you agree in the comments!
10. Captain Underpants (David Soren)
“Never underestimate the power of underwear!”
A snub from the Golden Globes was enough to see the Cap’ make it into the top ten – it was close! A wonderful film indeed; every line is this gloriously daft! Read our review here.
9. Get Out (Jordan Peele)
“If I could, I would have voted for Obama for a third term.”
Wouldn’t we all? In this context, it’s an exquisite line loaded with socio-racial comment. Read our review here.
8. The Florida Project (Sean Baker)
“The doctor said we’ve got asthma and we’ve got to eat ice-cream…”
Delightful on every level, The Florida Project’s brilliance can be seen in its script and cast alike. Brooklynn Prince delivers lines such as this wonderfully, whilst there’s hidden sadness – these being children whose families can’t afford healthcare in America. Read our review here.
7. Hacksaw Ridge (Mel Gibson)
“With the world so set on tearing itself apart, it don’t seem like such a bad thing to me to want to put a little bit of it back together.”
Mel Gibson’s so-called ‘return to form’ didn’t quite do it for us, but the concept was lovely and Garfield’s character earnest. Read our review here.
6. The Death of Stalin (Armando Iannucci)
“Jesus Christ! Did Coco Chanel take a s**t on your head?”
His role might have been smaller than the trailers promised, but Jason Isaacs nailed every line – with thick Northern accent – that word-maestro Iannucci threw at him.
5. Logan (James Mangold)
“Nature made me a freak, man made me a weapon. God made it last too long.”
A more serious final outing for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, world-weariness gave him the chance to shine. Read our review here.
4. Mudbound (Dee Rees)
“When I think of the farm I think of mud and crusted knees and hair. Marching in boot-shaped patches across the floor. I dreamed in brown.”
Rees’ script, co-written with Virgil Williams and based on the novel by Hillary Jordan, drips with poetic beauty. It has a perfect cast to deliver the lines too. Read our review here.
3. Thor: Ragnarok (Taika Waititi)
“Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Korg. I’m kind of like the leader in here. I’m made of rocks, as you can see, but don’t let that intimidate you. You don’t need to be afraid, unless you’re made of scissors! Just a little Rock, Paper, Scissors joke for you.”
No-one does dry New Zealand humour like Taika Waititi, and never has it been better utilised than in the form of Korg. Frankly, any of the character’s lines could have made the list. Read our review here.
2. The Big Sick (Michael Showalter)
“We lost nineteen of our best men that day.”
Far and away, the one liner of the year. It tap-dances on the line of good taste but we’re still giggling. Read our review here.
1. Paddington 2 (Paul King)
“If we’re kind and polite, the world will be right.”
A life lesson many in today’s world should head, this is a quote that sums up all that is lovely and warm about Paddington 2 Read our review here.
