Ingrid Goes West | Review

★★★★

Bittersweet has rarely felt more apt a description than in the case of Ingrid Goes West, a film both painfully sour in its bitterness and poignantly sweet in its aesthetic. Pitch black humour might make for a biting satire but, in Matt Spicer’s hands, this comes not at the expense of heartbreaking emotional resonance. You’ll never ‘follow’ social media in the same way again.

A Bad Moms Christmas | Review

★★

ISIS, cancer, homelessness and Jews are all fair game for comedy in Jon Lucas and Scott Moore’s quick turn around sequel to last year’s reasonably successful Bad Moms. Essentially following the footsteps of many a generic sequel, the totally inessential A Bad Moms Christmas rehashes round one to derivative effect. Up with the ante, down with originality.

Thor: Ragnarok | Review

★★★

Claiming the honour of being the best Thor film to date isn’t exactly high praise but, in the case of Thor: Ragnarok, it does at least herald the incoming of a pleasingly fresher take on the Norse god’s super-sub-franchise. With the surprisingly tangible vision of Hunt of Wilderpeople’s Taika Waititi, part-three Thor makes for a fun addition to Marvel’s tiresomely sprawling universe and blessed relief for Chris Hemsworth’s erstwhile little used funny bones.
